The film draws a pointed parallel between that pivotal clash of civilisations and the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, framing both events as part of a long struggle between Islamic expansion and Western culture. The battle sequences culminate in the relief of Vienna by the combined forces under King John III Sobieski of Poland.
