September Eleven 1683
Directed by Renzo Martinelli (2011)
An Italian historical epic centring on the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, following the desperate defence of the city by its Polish and European Christian allies against the vast Turkish army led by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa. The film draws a pointed parallel between that pivotal clash of civilisations and the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, framing both events as part of a long struggle between Islamic expansion and Western culture. The battle sequences culminate in the relief of Vienna by the combined forces under King John III Sobieski of Poland.
