The film observes the mundane rhythms of their domestic life — meals, leisure, career ambitions — rendering the horror of the Holocaust through deliberate absence rather than explicit depiction. A young Polish girl secretly leaves food for prisoners in the dark, offering a quiet counterpoint to the Höss family's wilful obliviousness.
