Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his wife Hedwig live with their children in a comfortable family home directly beside the camp's perimeter wall, tending their garden and socialising with neighbours while the industrialised murder of Jewish people continues just metres away. The film observes the mundane rhythms of their domestic life — meals, leisure, career ambitions — rendering the horror of the Holocaust through deliberate absence rather than explicit depiction. A young Polish girl secretly leaves food for prisoners in the dark, offering a quiet counterpoint to the Höss family's wilful obliviousness.
