Intimacy 12: Nudity and Covering Up
Film productions use various techniques to protect your privacy while creating the right visual effect.
If something doesn't appear in the frame, it'll be covered.
That means that if there's a scene showing you from the waist up, you might wear shorts underneath. And for close-ups, you'll be fully clothed.
For more explicit shots, there are special coverings:
- Flesh-coloured underwear or patches
- Adhesive coverings for private areas
- So-called “cock socks” for male actors or sometimes prosthetics
- Flesh-coloured body stockings that look like bare skin
Note, if it's full nudity, sometimes female actors will wear a lightly sticky patch something like a very thin sanitary pad; but in this case, remember that the less hair you have the better as it can be a little painful to remove if the tape is too sticky.
Some actors prefer minimal coverage, others want maximum. Both approaches are fine. Work with costume and camera departments to find what makes you comfortable while serving the scene.
Film is about creating illusions. You might appear completely naked on screen, while being well-covered in reality. The audience will never know the difference when it's done properly.
