Intimacy 13: What Filming Day Is Really Like

Here's what might surprise you about filming intimate scenes: they're usually much less romantic and dramatic than you'd expect. Many actors say their first intimate scene was boring!

The Reality #

The crew prepares the set (this takes forever). You get ready in makeup and wardrobe. You wait around, then rehearse movements in robes. You shoot the scene from one angle — probably a wide shot first.

Cut!

Coffee break while they move lights and camera. Shoot again from different angle.

Cut!

Another break. Close-ups. More waiting.

So in the end a passionate 30-second love scene might take 5–6 hours to film. You'll do the same actions dozens of times, with lots of waiting between.

In the final edit, you might see 60 seconds of actors making love, but the reality is stop-start-stop-start technical work.

This rhythm can be draining. You have to keep switching from ordinary chat during breaks to heightened passion when cameras roll. It takes practice and professionalism to maintain energy and focus.

During Action #

When the director calls, “Action!” good actors instinctively block out everything except the scene. While many worry beforehand, once they begin they tend to forget everything around them and perform.

They're in the moment, totally connected with their scene partner as if it were real life.

Then when the director calls “Cut!” the intimacy stops, and you're just two professionals taking a break. An intimate scene is like any other scene — when it's over, you step back and have a cup of tea.
