Intimacy 10: Closed Sets and Privacy

Many intimate scenes are filmed on closed sets.

These are sets where only essential personnel present. This usually means the director, camera operator, sound recordist, intimacy coordinator, wardrobe/make-up, and the actors.

If a closed set would make you more comfortable, ask for it. Good directors understand this often leads to better performances because actors feel more relaxed.

As filming progresses, and you become more comfortable, you might notice non-essential people wandering in — an assistant director with coffee, or a producer checking out the action. You have every right to stop and insist everyone respect the closed set.

You can also request that no photographs be taken during intimate scenes. This is completely reasonable and should be respected.

The Starship Troopers shower scene is a famous example of mutual respect. The cast only agreed to the nude scene if director Paul Verhoeven was also naked during filming. He agreed, showing the kind of professional understanding that should exist between actors and directors.
