Intimacy 09: Rehearsing Safely

Rehearsing intimate scenes builds confidence and creates better performances. Plus, it makes filming more enjoyable because you know what you're doing.

Always rehearse with a third-person present — ideally the intimacy coordinator, perhaps the director. This keeps everything professional and prevents misunderstandings because if it's just two actors alone in a trailer, the dynamic can shift from professional to personal. You're there talking intimately and perhaps touching, and it's easy for lines to get blurred. A third-person keeps it professional.

Start gently and build up gradually. Check in with each other regularly. Don't be afraid to stop and adjust anything that doesn't feel right.

Respecting Your Scene Partner #

Not all actors feel the same about intimate scenes. While you might enjoy them, your partner might be incredibly nervous and unable to sleep the night before. Or vice versa.

So be utterly respectful of your scene partner. Work out what will happen, then give them time to process everything. Don't rush them and don't ever impose.

One male actor told us:

I'm always careful about what I do in intimate scenes. I worry she'll think I'm trying to get a free feel. I always ask first and work with her to sort out what we can and can't do. Afterward, I'll make a light joke to show I'm being professional, not trying anything on.
