A school caretaker, driven to desperation by financial ruin and personal loss, takes a classroom of children hostage and straps explosives to himself, demanding that his debts be cancelled. A crisis negotiator works to establish communication with the man while police surround the building, trying to resolve the standoff without casualties. As the tense hours pass, the negotiator begins to understand the troubled backstory behind the man's extreme actions.
