The series follows both the original police investigation, which famously went unsolved for decades, and the parallel story of Engström's life and psychology as a suspect. It blends reconstructed events with a portrait of how an ordinary, unremarkable man may have committed one of Scandinavia's most notorious crimes and evaded justice until his death.
