His defence, however, hinges on a remarkable claim: that the paintings he sold were not genuine Old Masters at all, but elaborate forgeries he had created himself. A Dutch investigator becomes increasingly fascinated by the case and must determine whether the man is a traitor or a peculiar kind of patriot.
