Two girls from a poor neighbourhood in post-war Naples forge an intense, lifelong friendship shaped by rivalry, ambition and the constraints of their working-class world. The series follows Elena, a studious and reflective young woman, as she pursues education and a path out of poverty, while remaining bound to her brilliant but volatile friend Lila. Their intertwined lives unfold against a backdrop of social change, violence and personal transformation across decades of Italian history.
