A young German engineer is sent to manage a remote industrial estate on behalf of his ailing employer, where he falls into a slow, restrained romance with the older man's much younger wife. Bound by loyalty and circumstance, the two suppress their feelings across years of separation during the First World War. When the husband's health finally fails, the long-deferred reunion between the lovers proves bittersweet and quietly devastating.
