Following the death of his wife, the ageing Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man travels to San Francisco to seek a school placement for his estranged son, and finds himself drawn into conflict between the local Chinese community and a hostile faction within the United States Marine Corps. A Chinese association leader initially resents Ip Man's presence, but the two men are united when a belligerent marine sergeant begins violently targeting Chinese martial arts practitioners. Ip Man ultimately faces the sergeant in a climactic showdown, defending the dignity and place of Chinese people in America while confronting his own terminal illness.
