A documentary portrait of the German author Erich Kästner, best known for works such as *Emil and the Detectives*, which explores the dual nature of his character and examines how his experiences during two world wars and the Nazi era shaped both his writing and his personal identity. Drawing on archival material and literary analysis, the film investigates the tensions between Kästner's public image as a beloved children's author and the more complex, darker dimensions of his life and personality.
