Public and Private Media
Every photo, showreel, CV and voice reel you add to your profile is public: anyone who opens your profile can see it. Each item has a Private tick box under it in Edit Profile. This page explains exactly what that tick does for each kind of item, because it is not the same for all of them.
What Private means #
An item you mark as Private is hidden from your public profile. Nobody who opens your profile sees it: not casting directors, not agents, not other members, not visitors, not search engines. You do not see it either when you look at your own profile page. It only appears in Edit Profile, where you can untick it at any time.
The item is not deleted. It stays on enCAST exactly as you uploaded it, and the enCAST team can still see it when checking profiles.
Private items and applications #
When you apply for a role, you choose which items to send with your application. What a casting director receives depends on the kind of item, so Private works differently for each.
Photos
Your selected photos are sent with the application. A private photo can still be selected, so you can send a photo to one casting director without showing it to everyone on your profile.
Showreels
Your selected showreel is sent as a link. A private showreel can still be selected, and the casting director follows the link to YouTube or Vimeo to watch it. Marking it Private on enCAST only hides it from your profile; it does not change who can watch the video on YouTube or Vimeo.
If you want a showreel that only people with the link can watch, set that on the video site itself:
- On YouTube, set the video to Unlisted. It will not appear in searches or on your channel, but the link still plays.
- On Vimeo, set the privacy to Unlisted (older accounts call this “Only people with a link”).
Important: do not set the video to Private on YouTube or Vimeo. A video set to Private there will not play for the casting director, even with the link. See also YouTube Links on enCAST and Vimeo Links on enCAST.
CVs
Your CV is not sent with the application. The casting director reads it on your profile. A private CV is hidden there, so it would never be seen. For this reason a private CV is not offered when you apply: only your public CVs are listed.
Voice reels
Private voice reels are not offered when you apply either. Private means the reel is for you only, not for casting directors. To use a reel in applications, keep it public.
The first item is always public #
The first item in each block cannot be made private. This is why you see no Private tick box under it.
- Your first photo is your profile picture. It is shown on your profile, in search results and on applications, so it must be public.
- Your first showreel, your first CV and your first voice reel work the same way. A profile with a showreel, a CV or a voice reel always shows at least one of each.
Photos and CVs can be reordered: click and hold an item, drag it to a new place and let go. Whatever you drag into first place becomes the public one. Showreels and voice reels stay in the order you added them, so the one you added first is the public one.
How to make an item private #
- Go to Edit Profile and open the Media tab.
- Find the item and tick Private under it.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes.
To make it public again, untick the box and save.
