A young deaf-mute boy in early twentieth-century rural England is devoted to his older brother, who works down the coal mines to support them both after the death of their parents. When war breaks out, the older brother enlists and the two are separated, sending the vulnerable younger boy on a harrowing journey to be reunited with the only family he has ever known.
