A celebrated American novelist travels to communist Czechoslovakia in the 1970s to retrieve the unpublished manuscripts of a deceased Jewish writer, navigating a world of surveillance, sexual intrigue, and moral compromise. The mission brings him into contact with the writer's volatile widow and a circle of dissidents living under the oppressive weight of the regime. The experience forces him to confront questions about art, freedom, and the price of survival in a society that crushes individual expression.
