A journalist for the Los Angeles Times encounters a homeless man playing a battered violin on the streets of the city, and discovers that he was once a gifted student at the Juilliard School. As the reporter attempts to help his new friend rebuild his life and pursue his extraordinary musical talent, he must confront the realities of mental illness and the limits of what one person can do for another.
