A teenage girl living in the Netherlands struggles to balance her responsibilities at home — caring for her younger siblings while her mother is largely absent — with her own desires for freedom, romance, and a normal adolescent life. When she becomes romantically involved with a young man, the relationship offers her a brief escape from her burdens, but the tensions of her difficult domestic circumstances continue to close in around her.
