A lonely, emotionally fragile woman living quietly with her teenage son takes in an escaped convict who turns up injured and desperate. Over the course of a long weekend, the man proves himself gentle and capable, forging an unexpected bond with both mother and son as a sense of family begins to form. The boy narrates the story from adulthood, reflecting on how those few days irrevocably shaped his understanding of love and loss.
