A professional basketball referee meets an American woman in Paris when he helps her retrieve her late father's remains after an airline mishap, and the two fall unexpectedly in love. The story of their relationship is told in non-linear fashion by friends gathered at a restaurant, as they debate whether the couple will reconcile after a series of difficulties stemming from the demands of his career and the strains of married life.
