Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (The Count of Monte Cristo)

A wrongly imprisoned man spends years in a forbidding island fortress, where he acquires vast knowledge and wealth through an unlikely benefactor. Upon his eventual escape, he reinvents himself as the mysterious and fabulously rich Comte de Monte-Cristo, methodically engineering the downfall of the men who betrayed him. The film is a sweeping French adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's classic novel, following Edmond Dantès's transformation from naïve sailor to calculating architect of revenge.
