A veteran pilot is brought out of semi-retirement to join the crew of a commercial aircraft, despite tensions arising from a personal conflict with a colleague. When a catastrophic volcanic eruption and earthquake devastate an island during a routine flight, the crew must attempt a desperate rescue mission and then battle extreme conditions to bring survivors home safely. The film combines personal drama with large-scale disaster spectacle, drawing loosely on a Soviet-era predecessor of the same name.
