James McElvar was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up in Cumbernauld. As a young teenager he joined UK Theatre School.

A flair for performing led to him becoming one fifth of all Scottish boy-band Rewind who were managed by Jonathan Shalit and Kasey Monroe. They enjoyed great success in their homeland.
