About Me
Gianni Selvaggi was born in Malta, to an Italian father and a Maltese mother and has been performing professionally on the Maltese scene since 2012 and in the UK since 2017.
Before taking to the theatrical stage, Gianni’s primary focus was singing and songwriting, having trained from the age of 8, after he joined (and eventually became a soloist in) his school choir. Having no formal training in acting, he began to take a stronger interest in theatre following lead roles in musicals and a number of student productions.
In 2014, Gianni became a member of the Malta Amateur Dramatic Club (MADC), and in 2015 began training under the tutelage of practitioner Denise Mulholland, forming part of the national youth theatre company, Teatru Manoel Youth Theatre company (TMYT).
Productions with TMYT include puppeteering the Old Man in The Three Sunsets (2015), Teddy in RUBBISH (2016) and M in Lungs (2016). In November 2016, Gianni performed in TMYT’s original production of CLUB at the Chrysalis Festival, held at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.
Also In 2016, Gianni successfully obtained his ATCL Diploma in Speech and Drama with a Distinction from Trinity College, London, and was awarded Best Actor and Best Production in the MADC One Acts Play Festival for his role in 22 Minutes
Gianni is very fond of writing. Penning 2 recorded singles with his former band, his focus has shifted to balance out songwriting and scriptwriting, often combining the two together. His writing credits include TMYT’s Hell’s Gatekeeper (2017) and the musical My Fanny Valentine, which was staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2017. His first solo performance, “…You Make Lemonade” (2018), is a one-man dramatic comedy that touches on the subjects of cancer in men and mental health.
He has graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Communication Studies at the University of Malta and obtained his MA in Performance (Acting) at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
As part of his ongoing studies, Gianni’s most recent solo piece, titled BLENDER, is an exploration into the genesis of his blended Italo-Maltese accent through autoethnographic performance and intermediality practices.
Gianni is represented by ARA Talent Group.
