About Me
My name is Marc Philipps and I live in Berlin.
I grew up in in a bilingual household in germany with a german/scottish father and a romanian mother. Language was an important part of my life. I speak german, romanian, english and some french. All of these languages allow me to discover another side of my personality.
Meanwhile I have played in the first four languages in movies.
I was born February 9th, 1981 and began performing as a pianist at an early age. My passion and admiration for the stage led me to take part in acting workshops. In 2003, I began participating in the avantgardistic event series “Loonyland” in Cologne where I was able to excel as a versatile and daring performance artist.
Soon I expanded these performances and created artist collectives for art fairs, festivals or award shows. As a solo performer I worked for clubs, bars, art fairs, festivals, awards shows, hotels & a castle. In 2008 I toured as Sacha Baron Cohen's Double Borat through Germany and Belgium. I realized I was capable of catching people’s attention and captivating an audience
My stage experience gave me the confidence to begin my studies at the “German Center for Theater and Film” in Cologne (Director: Arved Birnbaum) in 2005. I graduated in 2009 and moved to Berlin shortly after in order to work in the film and theater industry.
I have primarily worked in physical and performative theater and consider myself an extremely flexible actor with particular improvisational strengths. My experience in several durational performances especially with the norwegian company Vinge / Müller required stamina and resilience (two invitations to the Theatertreffen 2012 & 2017) I further believe that being able to work in a wide variety of projects has given me the possibility also to adust myself to each project's requirements in order to support and increase their potential.
I think these skills will be a valuable addition for my work on set.
In movies I often play extreme and authoritarian roles; may they be of dramatic or funny nature.
In the comic roles, I master the tightrope act between comedy and slapstick without ever slipping into nonsense.
I am continuously being influenced by all sorts of people. As a matter of fact I'm interested in a diverse array of cultures and subcultures because to me different lifestyles have individual rewarding aspects. People on the streets, people I meet while traveling through Europe, my family, the people I work with and the people I have been sharing my life with as a partner. I like to take the part of an observer, because it offers me an impartial view on my fellow human beings. I like stories by people about people, made for people who deal with other people who can change one’s outlook on life and the habitual way of living. In filmmakers I am very attached to the stories and the way they are told by the likes of Parajanov, Mishima and contemporaries Kieślowski, Jarmusch and Wong Kar Wai.
Playing in movies is the perfect way for me to influence a larger scale of people into making them think about the minor/major problems humans have to deal with in their lives, and not be indifferent about the ones living around them. Also not being indifferent about themselves and how they see themselves with an "objective" point of view. Watching movies, we have the great opportunity of living life experiences in a shorter period of time than in real life. If the movie reaches the audience, it makes a change inside them.
I don't fit in a box. My passion is to remind others of their infinite potential I want to share my stories with the world. Everyone has several sides. These can be made accessible to the world while playing an interesting character in a film.
Marc Philipps is a trained actor, comedian, singer, dancer and performer; a man with many faces. Without so much as a bat of the eye, this jack of all trades can meet even the most daunting challenge.
