Your On-Set Bag

Every set is different.

You might find yourself in the middle of a field with nothing but a flimsy tent for shelter, or you might be in a luxurious trailer with incredible catering and superfast 5G.

But wherever you are, you must be prepared for the day on set so after surveying all the actors we know, and from our own extensive experience, this is a list of items we take with us on set to cover any eventuality!

Of course, not every item will be needed every time, but if you check off this list the day before you’re due on set, you should be well covered.

Essentials #

These items should often be taken to set when you're shooting; use a small bag, not something big you have to haul around.

• the script
• the call sheet with all contact numbers for the production, ADs, etc
• pen & notebook for quick notes
• mobile phone + recharge cable/plug/power bank
• wallet/purse + money/credit card
• passport/ID card
• refillable water bottle
• facemask and sanitising hand gel
• tissues
• chapstick, sun lotion
• mosquito spray
• hat, umbrella
• sunglasses and normal glasses 
• mints and/or mouth spray
• aspirin/ibuprofen/throat lozenges/antihistamines/indigestion pills etc
• hearing aids or any other assistive items
• personal makeup (including mirror, eye drops, plasters, sanitary products) as needed
• suitable coat (warm/waterproof, etc, in case you’re stuck outside waiting)
• thermal underwear for those long night shoots
• business cards if you have them
• snacks
• book (crossword books are good to pass the time) or kindle etc

Useful items as needed #

Could be taken to set or left back in the hotel, depending.

• download local map onto phone if it’s off the beaten track
• bus/train/plane tickets as needed
• toothpicks/toothbrush/toothpaste
• laptop or tablet (and pen)
• buds/headphones/speakers
• plug socket adaptor for recharging
• your house keys
• foreign currency if you're abroad

Longer periods #

If you’re going to be away for a longer time, then these extras might come in handy:

• shaver
• wash bag (incl nail files, clippers, trimmers, deodorants, talc, creams, etc)
• eye mask
• earplugs
• night clothes (tee/shorts/flip-flops)
• casual hotel clothes (for breakfast, travelling to set)
• formal clothes (after wrap party)
• portable keyboard & mouse if needed
• Leatherman/Swiss army knife (or at least a bottle opener) - note that if you're going on a plane or through a secure area, this might be restricted
• wedge - if you're concerned about hotel security, you can take a small wedge with you to slip under the door at night

Paperwork #

As well as the above, take the paperwork with you. This could be the contract, work permit, call sheets, national insurance number, social security, etc. Often it's best to have these on your phone for easy access and security. Look at storing them in Proton Drive or Dropbox, etc.
