Why You MUST Check Your Spam Folder — Regularly!
This is not just a suggestion. It’s essential.
The Real-World Consequence of Not Checking #
Let us tell you a true story.
Recently, a friend and talented actor, Ana, called us in tears. She’d submitted a self-tape for a role in a major American TV series filming in Europe — and it was good. She even sent it to us for review, and we were confident in her chances.
Then… silence. Weeks turned into months, and she assumed the opportunity had passed.
But just last week, while searching for something unrelated in her Gmail, Ana spotted an old email buried in her spam folder. It was from the director of the series, inviting her to a face-to-face audition. The message was over six months old.
She had missed her callback — not because of talent, not because of timing, but because her email provider thought it looked like junk.
This Happens More Often Than You Think #
Ana's story is not unique. We hear similar things from actors again and again.
Casting directors, agents, producers, coordinators — they often send messages from addresses you've never seen before. These emails can:
- include links (which spam filters dislike)
- use odd formatting
- be sent in bulk
- have an attachment which (innocently) sets off alarms
And all it takes is one overzealous spam filter to send a life-changing opportunity into the digital void.
What You Must Do #
Make checking your spam folder part of your daily or weekly routine.
We recommend:
- Daily: If you’re actively applying for castings or expecting responses
- At least once a week: Even if you’re between jobs — you never know who might be trying to reach you
- Set reminders. Make it a habit. Treat it like brushing your teeth.
And when you check your spam folder:
- Scan carefully for messages from unknown senders with subject lines related to castings or your name
- Mark legitimate emails as “Not Spam” to train your provider
- Whitelist trusted addresses (casting@, submissions@, @encast.pro, etc.)
Pro Tip #
Some actors even create a separate email address just for castings, so they can monitor it more easily and avoid missing anything. If you do this, remember to check it regularly too — and set it up with a reliable email provider.
One Last Word… #
At enCAST, we check our spam folder every day. Because we know opportunities hide there. And we strongly urge you to do the same.
Don't let your next big break end up in the junk bin.
