Do actors need training?
When people talk about acting, one question often comes up: Do actors need to have training?
The answer is not just yes or no. It depends on different things.
Why Training Can Help #
Acting is a type of art. And like many kinds of art — painting, music, dance — it can improve with proper learning.
Many actors choose to train in:
- Drama schools
- Acting classes or workshops
- University or college programs
In these places, actors can:
- Practise their skills in a safe and supportive environment
- Learn from professional teachers
- Understand how theatre and film really work
- Improve their voice, movement, and emotions on stage or on screen
When Training is a Good Idea #
To Build Skills: Training helps with speaking clearly, acting naturally, and using different techniques.
To Be More Flexible: You learn many styles of acting — for stage, film, comedy, drama, and more.
To Meet People: Drama schools can connect you with directors, casting agents, and other actors.
To Understand the Art: Training gives you knowledge about the history of acting, and what makes it work well.
When Training is Not Always Needed #
Some actors do well without formal education.
Natural Ability: Some people are naturally good at acting. They understand emotions and perform well without any training.
Learning by Doing: You can act in local plays, short films, or online videos. This practical experience can be just as useful.
Your Own Choice: Not everyone wants to go to school. Some actors learn best by working, watching others, and practising.
Examples of Actors – With and Without Training #
Trained Actors:
- Judi Dench (UK) trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Famous for her powerful acting on stage and screen.
- Ralph Fiennes (UK) studied at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art). Known for both Shakespeare and Hollywood roles.
- Marion Cotillard (France) trained in Paris. Won an Oscar and is known for serious and emotional performances.
Untrained Actors:
- Michael Caine (UK) never went to drama school. Learned by working and acting in many films over the years.
- Lily Collins (UK) star of Emily in Paris, learns by watching real people and how they behave in daily life.
- Viggo Mortensen (Denmark/USA) never had formal training. Gained skills through working in many films in different countries.
So... Is Training Important? #
Yes.
For many actors, training is useful and gives them confidence.
But also, no.
It is not the only way to become a good actor. Many succeed by learning on their own.
In Short #
There is no one right answer. Every actor is different. What matters most is:
- Your talent
- Your effortYour choices
Whether you choose drama school, self-study, or just start acting — it’s your journey.
