Can an Actor have a Tattoo?

The simple answer is: it depends.

It depends on where the tattoo is, its size and design, how many you have, what kind of production you're dealing with, and the role you're submitting for.

It's complicated, but we can sort it out below.

What does the breakdown say? #

Sometimes a casting breakdown will be specific. It might say:

• no visible tattoos
• tattoos welcome

You can decide whether to submit for the job based on this.

But what if the breakdown doesn't mention tattoos? In this case, you'll have to use your judgement.

Can your tattoos be hidden? #

This is the usual first question, and the answer is yes, they can.

However, you then have to ask whether the production is willing to spend the time and money to hide them.

If you're the star of a blockbuster and need to take your shirt off at a crucial moment, they'll hide your tattoos. But if you're a featured extra with a dozen tattoos to cover, most productions won't bother; they'll simply cast someone without tattoos instead.

On a low-budget production without a dedicated make-up artist, they may not even have the skill to do the job properly, so again they might choose an actor who needs no extra work before appearing on camera.

Be sensible: go for jobs and productions where your tattoos won't matter, or will actively suit the role.

Where is the tattoo? #

An easily visible tattoo, on your face for example, will restrict the roles you can go for.

A casting director looking for an actor to play the President of France will likely delete your submission on sight. A casting director looking for a gangster might find your facial tattoos add an extra element and call you in for an audition.

Be sensible about the roles you pursue.

For many roles, a hidden tattoo makes no difference. If it's on your shoulder and you won't be taking your shirt off, no one will say a word.

If you do need to take your shirt off, weigh up the type and scale of the production against your role in it.

Should I tell them about my tattoos? #

If your tattoos are hidden and won't appear on screen, there's no need to mention them.

If they might appear, tell the production as soon as possible. Don't wait until you arrive on set the morning of the shoot, as they may need to bring in a specialised MUA.

Always give warning if your tattoos need to be covered with make-up.

Does the tattoo design make a difference? #

Yes, it does.

A swastika on the back of your hand will make it hard to find work. A small heart in the same spot probably won't raise an eyebrow.
