Hollywood 03: The Reality Check — Are You Ready for This?

We want to begin by being totally honest about Hollywood Dreams.

Let's say you're watching Netflix in London, Dublin, Berlin, or anywhere in Europe. You look at the actors and think, “I could do that.”

And yes, maybe you have some theatre experience, a few short films, perhaps a TV guest role.

And yes, you think America is calling your name.

But wait a moment. Before you start booking your flight to LAX, let's talk about the very first reality you need to face.

What you need to get to Hollywood #

To begin with, you need €25,000 to €45,000 minimum just to get legally established in LA for the first year.

We're not trying to scare you. We're being real. We're trying to save you from arriving in Hollywood unprepared, only to return home broke after three months.

But there's more. Take a look at this reality check quiz:

  1. Do you have more than 10 professional credits on IMDb? (Student films, short films, and drama school shows don't count as “professional”.)
  2. Do you have €25,000+ saved and ready to spend?
  3. Can you prove “extraordinary ability” in acting? (See below.)
  4. Do you have industry contacts in the USA who can support you? (Real ones, not friends of friends or someone you once met on set.)

If you answered, no to any of these, this guide is still for you, but you have serious preparation work to do before booking that flight.

And even if you answered, yes to all of these, then you've still got a long way to go!

Work & Prep #

It takes a lot to get from Europe to Hollywood. It can be done, and we have stories to prove it. But trust us, you need to really want it.

Still reading? Good! That means you're serious about this, not just dreaming, so kudos for that!
