The Zero Theorem

Directed by Terry Gilliam (2012)

A reclusive computer genius named Qohen Leth toils away in a decaying chapel, assigned by a mysterious corporation to solve an impossible mathematical problem intended to prove that existence has no meaning. He becomes increasingly isolated and existentially tormented as he wrestles with the task, sustained only by fleeting human connections and a desperate hope for a phone call he believes will reveal his life's purpose. The film is a darkly comic, visually baroque meditation on meaninglessness, identity, and the dehumanising effects of a surveillance-saturated future society.
