A man stumbles upon a mysterious island community off the English coast after a chance encounter leads him there, and he becomes increasingly entangled in the islanders' strange rituals and dark secrets. The story is split into two halves — "Summer," following Sam as he arrives and finds himself unable to leave, and "Winter," centring on a woman named Helen who brings her children to the island and uncovers a different layer of its unsettling mythology. Both narratives build towards a reckoning with the island's ancient, possibly sinister traditions and the personal traumas each character carries with them.
