The Last Station

(2009)

An elderly Leo Tolstoy finds himself caught between two opposing forces in the final years of his life: his devoted but increasingly desperate wife Sofya, who fears losing control of his literary estate, and his zealous disciple Chertkov, who seeks to have Tolstoy sign over the rights to his works to the Russian people. A young secretary, Valentin, is employed by Chertkov to observe and report on the household, but finds his loyalties shifting as he witnesses the genuine love and turmoil between the ageing writer and his wife. The struggle over Tolstoy's legacy drives him ultimately to flee his home in his final days.
