Faust
(1994)
A aged scholar, frustrated by the limits of human knowledge, strikes a bargain with a demonic figure who promises him renewed youth and worldly pleasures. Jan Švankmajer's adaptation blends live action with stop-motion puppetry and surreal imagery to retell the Faust legend in a contemporary Prague setting, where an ordinary man stumbles into a strange theatrical world and finds himself unwittingly cast in the title role. The boundary between performer and character dissolves as the man is drawn ever deeper into the ancient story's fateful conclusion.
