Kolya

Directed by Jan Svěrák (1996)

A middle-aged Czech cellist and confirmed bachelor reluctantly agrees to a marriage of convenience to help a Russian woman obtain Czechoslovak citizenship, only to find himself unexpectedly left in charge of her young son, Kolya. Despite the language barrier and his initial resistance, the two form a tender bond as they navigate daily life together in late 1980s Prague. The relationship is tested when political upheaval — the Velvet Revolution — transforms the world around them, forcing both to confront questions of belonging and connection.
