Tom Ripley is a young, impoverished American who is sent to Italy to persuade a wealthy man's son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Becoming obsessed with Dickie's privileged lifestyle, Tom murders him and assumes his identity, embarking on an increasingly desperate effort to maintain the deception. As investigators and acquaintances begin to close in, Tom finds himself committing further crimes to protect the life he has stolen.
