An Italian submarine commander, Salvatore Todo, navigates the moral complexities of war when his vessel rescues survivors from a merchant ship it has just torpedoed in the Atlantic. Bound by both naval law and his own conscience, Todo defies the expectations of wartime ruthlessness and risks his crew's safety to protect the civilians aboard. The film depicts these events, set in 1942, as a portrait of humanity and honour amid the brutality of the Second World War.
