A Hungarian Jewish prisoner working in the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-Birkenau becomes fixated on giving a proper Jewish burial to the body of a young boy he believes to be his son. While the camp seethes with a secret prisoner uprising in the background, Saul moves desperately through the machinery of the death camp seeking a rabbi who can perform the sacred rites. His singular, almost irrational mission forces him to risk both his own life and the broader resistance effort in pursuit of one last act of humanity amid the Holocaust's industrialised horror.
