A whaling vessel out of Nantucket meets catastrophe in the Pacific Ocean when an enormous sperm whale attacks and sinks the ship, leaving the crew adrift thousands of miles from shore. Struggling to survive on dwindling supplies across months at sea, the desperate sailors are forced into increasingly grim choices. The story is framed as a first-hand account being drawn out of an aged survivor by the author Herman Melville, whose interview with the man will inspire his novel *Moby-Dick*.
