Effi Briest
Directed by Hermine Huntgeburth (2009)
A young woman in late nineteenth-century Prussia is married off to a much older baron and diplomat, leaving her feeling isolated and unfulfilled in her new social role. She embarks on a brief affair with a charming military officer, a secret that lies dormant for years until her husband accidentally discovers evidence of it long after it has ended. Bound by rigid codes of honour, her husband feels compelled to duel the former lover and subsequently casts Effi out, severing her from her daughter and her place in society, leaving her to decline in lonely disgrace.
