Die Nacht der großen Flut

Directed by Raymond Ley (2005)

A documentary reconstruction of the catastrophic North Sea flood of February 1962, which devastated Hamburg and claimed over three hundred lives. The film combines archive footage and photographs with dramatised sequences and eyewitness testimony to convey the scale of the disaster and the human stories behind it. It also examines the political response, including the controversial role played by then Hamburg senator Helmut Schmidt in coordinating the emergency relief effort.
