Good Bye Lenin!
Directed by Wolfgang Becker (2003)
Alex's devoted mother falls into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and when she wakes months later, her doctors warn that any severe shock could prove fatal. Knowing his mother is a committed socialist who idolised the GDR, Alex goes to extraordinary lengths to conceal the collapse of East Germany from her, reconstructing her old bedroom and staging elaborate fictions to maintain the illusion that nothing has changed. As he hunts down discontinued East German food products and persuades friends to act in homemade news broadcasts, the deception grows increasingly difficult to sustain. The scheme ultimately forces Alex to confront his own complicated feelings about the vanished country of his childhood.
