Set in 18th-century Venice, the legendary lover Giacomo Casanova faces execution unless he can secure a respectable marriage, leading him to pursue a wealthy young woman whilst simultaneously falling genuinely in love with her sharp-witted, free-thinking fiancée. The arrival of a puritanical inquisitor from Rome threatens to expose both his romantic schemes and his reputation. The resulting tangle of mistaken identities, disguises, and competing suitors builds to a farcical climax in which true love and personal liberty are ultimately championed over rigid social convention.
