The film weaves her personal triumphs and tragedies together with flash-forward sequences depicting the far-reaching consequences of radioactivity, from life-saving medical treatments to the devastation of nuclear warfare. After Pierre's sudden death, Marie must battle professional hostility and public scandal whilst continuing her pioneering research alone.
