A French safecracker named Henri Charrière is convicted of a murder he insists he did not commit and is shipped off to the brutal French penal colonies in South America. Forging an unlikely alliance with a cunning forger called Louis Dega, he endures savage conditions, repeated punishment and a series of daring escape attempts. His obsessive determination to reclaim his freedom ultimately drives him across treacherous waters to Venezuela.
