1809 Andreas Hofer - Die Freiheit des Adlers

Directed by Xaver Schwarzenberger (2002)

A Tyrolean innkeeper and folk hero, Andreas Hofer, leads a popular uprising against Napoleonic and Bavarian forces occupying his homeland in 1809, rallying peasant fighters to a series of improbable military victories in the mountain passes. As political betrayal by his Austrian allies leaves him increasingly isolated, Hofer struggles to hold his resistance together before ultimately being captured and facing execution. The film portrays his journey from ordinary innkeeper to legendary martyr of Tyrolean identity and patriotism.
