Angelo

Directed by Markus Schleinzer (2018)

An African boy named Angelo Soliman is taken from his homeland in the 18th century and brought to Europe, where he is raised as a curiosity and status symbol among the Austrian aristocracy. Despite his intelligence and accomplishments, he remains perpetually defined by his race, navigating a society that views him as an exotic object rather than a human being. His life, spanning from childhood servitude to eventual recognition as a free man, is told in a series of tableau-like episodes that expose the casual cruelty of Enlightenment-era Europe.
