Tehran Taboo

Directed by Ali Soozandeh (2017)

A young woman working as a prostitute in Tehran becomes entangled with a musician who needs her help obtaining a permit, while elsewhere a pregnant woman seeks an abortion and a judge's wife pursues her own quiet rebellion against her constrained existence. The lives of these characters intersect across a city where desire, hypocrisy, and strict religious law collide in ways that carry serious consequences. Shot using rotoscope animation over live-action footage, the film portrays the hidden contradictions of contemporary Iranian society, where public morality enforces one set of rules while private behaviour follows another entirely.
